Saving Money with Solar - Webinar

So, how much was your last electricity bill? Any new appliances drawing in more power? Is that going to make your bill substantially higher?

Electricity rates have typically been going up in Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and pretty much everywhere across the country. It doesn’t just stop there, we also keep adding new technology to our house causing us to use more energy. Between higher rates and more usage our demand for electricity from providers like Maritime Electric are always going to go up.

What can we do?

Many electricity providers have a Net Metering Solar program offered like that of Maritime Electric. Net Metering means that you utilize solar panels on your roof or ground, to gather and convert energy into a useable form for your house that will reduce your need for electricity from a large provider.

How net metering works:

  1. Your solar panels absorb the suns energy and convert it to a DC electric current

  2. The solar inverter converts the DC into a usable AC electric current

  3. Your electrical panel supplies your house with electricity

  4. The excess electricity goes to the grid and credits are accumulated that are used at times where you need energy from the grid instead of the energy from the panels (like at night)

How net metering works over the year:

Oct-Mar (Winter)

Usually your house will require more electricity than your solar panels can produce. So typically at this time you are drawing a larger % of your electricity from the grid

April - September (Spring/Summer)

At this time the solar panels on your house will typically over produce electricity and you will bank credits with your electricity provider that can be used at times when you need to draw from the grid

The goal: Produce enough electricity from solar panels in the peak months that offset most, if not all, your energy needs at times of under production. Learn more: Seasonality of net metering
